How to make Windows Defender active?
Katherine,
Windows Defender is a spyware detection and removal software offered by Microsoft for all versions of genuine copies Windows Vista and Windows Seven. It’s also available for genuine copies of Windows XP SP2, SP3 or Windows Server 2003 SP1 or later. So if you are using windows Vista or later version you already got it. If you have installed Antivirus software, Windows Defender might be turned off. To ensure Windows Defender is on which state click Start -> Type Windows Defender in the search box.
Incase it’s turned off you can turn it back by clicking ‘Turn on and open Windows Defender’. When you use it with Antivirus software like (Microsoft Security Essentials, Norton Antivirus & etc) other problems may occur due to conflicts of two services and even performance degradation of your PC.

How to make Windows Defender active?
Windows Defender comes pre-installed when you install Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 including Windows RT and Windows RT 8.1. If you’re on Windows 7, the best to install is Microsoft Security Essentials if you want a Microsoft antivirus. Windows Defender is also available for Windows 7 but unlike Microsoft Security Essentials which will give you complete protection, Windows Defender will only provide spyware protection on Windows 7.
If you’re on Windows 7, download Microsoft Security Essentials according to your language. Now, if you have Windows Defender and it doesn’t start, the main reason is if you have a third-party antivirus installed on your computer. Microsoft Windows is designed to detect the presence of security applications installed and when it detects a third-party antivirus or internet security program, Windows Defender will shut itself off.
If this is the case and you installed a third-party security software like Norton Security Deluxe or ESET Internet Security, uninstall your Norton Security Deluxe or ESET Internet Security and restart the computer. After booting, you need to turn on Windows Defender manually. Click “Start” then in the search box type without quotes “windows defender” then hit Enter.
In Windows Defender, go to “Settings” tab and check “Turn on real-time protection.” Another cause why Windows Defender is turned off is if the date and time settings on your computer are incorrect. To fix the problem, set your computer to your correct time zone and synchronize the time with the internet clock and also set the correct date.
