Hello!
My computer has Microsoft Works 9 installed on it and I have received some Microsoft Word (.doc) files which I cannot open. Anyone can tell me how can I open these files?
I had a document created in Microsoft Works (.wps) and saved on a CD.
My computer got infected and I had to buy a new one; the new computer has Microsoft Word installed on it. I am trying to open the .wps file with Microsoft Word but it doesn’t work.
Does anybody have a solution for opening .doc files with Microsoft Works and .wps files with Microsoft Word? Thank you.
How to open files in .doc and .wps extensions in Microsoft works?
It is easy to view .wps files or Works file in MS Word. You just need the converter that Microsoft provides for free. You can search it up in the internet. It is called the wp6rtf.exe. You can use this converter in MS Word 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2007 and you can open MS Works 4.0, 6.0, 7.0 and 9.0 documents.
To open Word 2007 in MS Works, you have to install the Office Compatibility Pack first. Without this, you will not be able to open .doc files in MS Works. Once you install this, you can open .doc files going to File > Open and locate the MS Word file you would like to open.
How to open files in .doc and .wps extensions in Microsoft works?
If that’s the problem then you simply need to upgrade your Microsoft Office Word to version 2007 or rather upgrade the entire Microsoft Office suite if you have the entire package installed. The DOC file format (*.doc) is the default save format of Microsoft Office Word 2003 and I don’t think this version can open Microsoft Works 9.0 files.
Upgrading to Office Word 2007 will allow you to open Microsoft Works files from version 6.0 up to 9.0. The default save format in Microsoft Office Word 2007 is DOCX (*.docx) and it is backward compatible with Office Word 2003 so there should be no problem accessing your old Office Word documents.
To open Microsoft Works 9.0 files in Office Word 2007, click on the Office button and select “Open” or press CTRL + O on your keyboard. In “Files of type” dropdown list, select “Works 6.0 – 9.0” then select your Microsoft Works file and click “Open.” And that’s it. Just save the file in DOC or DOCX format to easily access the file in the future.
