I am running Windows XP Professional and put a password for logging in to Windows. I went for a vacation and did not have the chance to open my computer for a few months. And when I get back, I realized that I installed a password and forgotten it completely. I want to know how I can recover it again or how to reset it. I can’t continue with my desktop since I have to log-in first and input my password.
Please help me.
How to recover Windows Log-in Password?
HI Kim Jenkins,
Good Day. On Windows XP, when you forget the password, there are 3 ways to retrieve it.
First: This is only applicable if you did set a hint beforehand:
-
On the log-in screen, click on the question mark next to the arrow button. Then there will be a hint given to you. You must think relevant answers to the hint provided. If correctly answered, you will be logged in.
Second: If all else fails:
-
Login as the Administrator by pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL twice. An old login style will appear:
User: Administrator
Password: (leave it blank)
-
Once logged in, click on MY COMPUTER then selects MANAGE.
-
On the left hand side: select LOCAL USERS AND GROUPS then USERS.
-
On the right hand side: Login Name will appear, right-click and SET PASSWORD.

It seems that your computer has another user account. So login to that user account and follow the steps below:
-
Click on ‘Start’ button.
-
Click ‘Run’.
-
In the ‘Open’ textbox type ‘control userpasswords2’. Please don’t enter quotes there.
-
Click ‘Ok’.
Now Windows XP opens the ‘User Accounts’ dialog box. Select your username from the list appears and click on ‘Reset Password’ . Enter a new password and confirm it by retyping in confirmation box. Click on ‘Ok’ button.
Now your password has been changed. Logout from the current user account and try to login to your account using the new password.
