If you want to connect or network two (2) computers directly to allow you to copy files between devices, I think it would be much faster to use the network card or Ethernet card than with USB. But to network two (2) computers using the network card, you cannot use a standard network cable because it will not work.
A standard network cable is designed to connect a computer to a hub to connect to other computers on the network. There are three types of network cables used on the computer: straight-through, crossover, and rollover. The first two are the ones used on the network to carry data while the last type, the rollover cable, is not designed to carry data.
The rollover cable is used mainly for programming or to create an interface with the device to make programming changes. The straight-through cable is the one I’m referring to as the standard network cable which connects a workstation to a hub. The crossover cable is the one you need to connect one computer directly to another.
You can buy a crossover cable on any computer online store like these ones on eBay:
As for the USB option, yes, it is possible to network two (2) computers using a USB cable and for this, you need to use a USB-USB cable. The same with Ethernet cables, USB-USB cables are also available in different types. That’s why you need to be specific when buying a USB-USB cable to avoid purchasing the wrong cable.
The kind of USB-USB cable you need to buy is called the “bridged” type or the “USB networking cable”. Check out the following USB networking cable listings on eBay:
