The proper steps to do patching are-
1. Schedule a window mostly around the time when you don’t work.
2. Have a test server to test the patch on that.
3. Download the patch beforehand.
4. Run the script and apply the patch.
5. Verify that the patch is installed.
6. Do the necessary documentation and tasks to make it work ready.
