I am facing a unique problem here. My laptop was purchased in 2012 and it came with windows 7 operating System. I recently got Windows 8.1 OS installed from a service centre. After about 15 days, the FAN in the laptop turns on and runs at full speed. It is very annoying. Laptop is cool now all the time but the sound is little frustrating. Also, let me know if i go for reinstallation of OS. Please reply if more information is required. PS: Earlier, the laptop fan used to turn on only when i played high graphic games.

The reason your laptop fan is running continuously is due to missing correct driver software. This may be due to the up gradation of your laptop OS. It is not preferred to turn off your CPU as it causes to overheating and which may lead to melting of plastic materials inside the laptop.

Solution 1: Try to download the latest driver software from your laptop manufacturer website and install it.

Solution 2: Download and try the following software which will control fan speed from here.

I don’t think there’s something wrong with your laptop’s cooling fan. The function of the cooling fan is to minimize the heat that’s building up as you use your computer. This happens the moment you start the machine. If you are only using normal applications like Microsoft Office Word or any program that doesn’t use heavy graphics, the cooling fan will run at normal speed.

But if you start to play games or use applications like Adobe Photoshop or any other applications that use heavy graphics, the cooling fan will work at the highest possible speed to control the heat inside the laptop. When the cooling fan is running at high speed, you may hear a little noise as it operates.

But if your cooling fan is a little bit old and it’s already dirty inside, it may become noisy. When the noise is already irritating, it means the cooling fan needs cleaning and lubricating. To fix this, you need to bring it to a service center to service it. They will replace the cooling fan with a new one.

On the other hand, one workaround that may work if you don’t want to service it is to use a cooling pad like this one on Amazon: Otimo Laptop Cooling Pad for 12-17 inch Laptop.
