Hello Chet,
Before you upgrade your PC from Windows XP to Win 7 You have to check your computers configurations.
Check whether you have the following specifications:-
Those are the most important specifications you need.
Firstly you will need a External Hard drive, because you have to take a backup of your documents to another external hard drive. Otherwise you will lose your documents which you saved earlier.
Go to the following web site they will show you, how to do the upgrading your PC from Windows XP to Win 7.
They will give you a chance to print it out.
Since the system specifications of Windows 7 are already posted above, I would just explain the process of installing or upgrading your Windows XP to Windows 7. Before upgrading your operating system make sure that all your programs and devices will still work on Windows 7. This means you need to check their compatibility with the new platform. To help you in verifying your system’s compatibility, you need first to download and install Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.
Since the program requires Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, the setup wizard might ask you to install it. If you don’t have it yet on your computer, the wizard will automatically download it for you. Just follow the instructions to complete the installation. After the installation run the program. When the security warning dialog box appears, simply click Yes. After that click “Start check”. The scan might take a few minutes to finish. When the program is finished, read the report carefully and then follow the steps in fixing some issues if there are any.
If all problems are already fixed, download and install Windows Easy Transfer from Windows Easy Transfer. Make sure to select the correct version for your operating system. Run the program after the installation. This program requires that you have an extra external hard drive or USB flash drive to store the settings that the program will be saving. Select your external hard drive or USB flash drive and then click “This is my old computer”. This will then scan your computer. Simply follow the instructions on the screen then save the file on your external storage.
Next step is to begin the installation of Windows 7. If you’ve already downloaded the setup file then browse the folder where you save it then start the program. Accept the terms and then click Next. When prompted “Which type of installation do you want”, select Custom. Select the partition where Windows XP is installed then click Next. Simply click OK on the “Windows.old” dialog box. Follow the instructions until you are finished installing Windows 7. After the installation you need to transfer all the settings from the external storage to the newly installed Windows 7.
Connect first the external storage or the USB flash drive where you previously saved the settings of Windows XP to your computer. Next, click Start, Computer, and then under Hard Disk Drives double-click your USB flash drive. Browse the location where you saved “Windows Easy Transfer – Items from old computer” and then double-click it. Follow the instructions in restoring the settings and configurations. Finally, reinstall all your programs and then update all the drivers. If it’s still kind of confusing, visit Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7.
