How would I connect my desktop PC to the internet?
For a laptop, if it is possible to get wireless internet access at home or anywhere, would I need a router to get access with a desktop?

To connect wirelessly via a desktop computer, you may need to check the desktop first. Wireless connection can only be detected with the use of a wireless adapter. Desktops usually do not have built in wireless card installed on them. So you need to check that first by going to Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Network Adapters. If there is no wireless adapter, then you may need to purchase an external wireless card.
If there is an attached wireless card, you just need to make sure all drivers are enabled and activated. You may need to purchase a router then. Modems usually do not have wireless capability so you need to get yourself a router.
Hello Andy,
Yes, you would need an external solution for wireless connectivity as most desktops do not have built-in wireless capability. You would need a Wireless USB Adapter to plug into your desktop to be able to connect with the existing WiFi networks around you. One of the cheap devices you can buy is D-Link's N USB.
You can find it in your area on a computer shop or you can order it on EBay also. This USB can be then used on both Desktop and Laptops with the capability of built-in wireless connectivity. Normally these devices have plug and play installation so you don't have to install any software to run them.Â
Good luck with your connection.
Abe.
Thank you Aristono Martin and Abe Bryan for your answers. Now I know that I need a wireless adapter to connect through wi-fi. Many thanks TechyV!
