I am unable to connect to Filezilla on HostGator

Please look at these error messages

– Response: 530 Login Authentication failed

-Error: Critical error

-Error: Could not connect to server.

That is the result of my effort to connect Filezilla to sub-domain on HostGator. Despite a check on FileZilla FTP connection and configuration, I still am getting ‘Timed out’ error. Do you have an idea on how I can succeed?

This is quite a common, but easy to fix problem using Filezilla or any FTP program.  Here is the fix to your particular situation.  Make sure you follow all of these steps to ensure a proper connection to the server:

1. Open Filezilla-go to the top left hand corner underneath 'file' dropdown

2. Type https://ww38.yoursite.com/ as the 'main website address'

3. Type your cpanel log-in user name

4. Type your cpanel log-in password

5. Type your port #

6. Press Connect

Make sure all of these items are correct.  This should fix your problem and you shouldn't receive anymore error messages.

With my experience with using filezilla for transferring files from a localhost to a remote host, it requires that you have a strong internet connection especially if you are transferring many files, and you should also use the right addresses for the local and remote server ports. So I will suggest that you do the following:

  • Check the internet connection status of your computer. Check the IP addresses and make sure that they have been properly configured and also use the PING command in the command line to check if the internet connection is strong enough.
  • Check also the ports that you are using in filezilla to connect to the remote host. Any slight mistake made in them will hinder the connection from being successful.

Hello Heather Finn, I have read your issue regarding the error messages while connecting your Filezilla to sub-domain hostgator. I have a quick solution to your issue this will fix the problem. Open your Filezilla type your domain name in the box “HOST” have it domain.com set-up. Type your username and password and type 21 in box “PORT”.  Hit the "Quickconnect” button for your files.

You can also apply this solution. The email you receive from HOSTGATOR contains the username, host name and the password as well. Launch your Filezilla program click FILE followed by SITE MANAGER (or CTRL S). Look for the NEW SITE indicate the connection name then click HOST write in your host name choose NORMAL and make sure it is SERVERTYPE shows FTP File Transfer Protocol as LOGONTYPE. You may verify your username and password and try to CONNECT.

I feel glad I've created an account here in Techyv. Thank you for the effort of answering my questions.  I can see that I have a lot ways of solving this. Thanks a lot to all. Flair, I tried your suggestion and it worked. Thank you. I would check on the others so I could explore Filezilla.

Good job!
