Missing WinZip on my Windows Vista

Techyv readers,

I got a part time online work and I just completed one of my portfolios and I will need to send this over to my boss in Win zip file. Well, I said Win zip file, because that is one of his required file sent to him.

When I right clicked on the folder, all I can see is RAR. So, I tried clicking on the Send To, then on to Compressed (zipped) Folder. Sadly, it produces a RAR file instead of zip file. I know I can just send it to my boss, since it is zipped as well anyway. But, what I am thinking is that, probably he does not have a RAR, that is we he is asking a Win zip instead.

From what I know, all Windows OS should have Win zip, why can’t I see it on mine? I got a Windows Vista Home Basic.

Kindly help.

Thanks.

Hi Gary,

In Vista there is a built-in file zipper but it isn’t Winzip. You are seeing a WinRAR icon since you most likely have a WinRAR program. When you installed WinRAR it becomes the default application for Zipped and Rar files, therefore every Zip and Rar files will have the WinRAR icon.

Your boss can still open those files, all you have to do is to make sure you format it into a Zip NOT a Rar.

Here is how to Zip files even if you have WinRAR installed:

  • Choose the files you want – You may choose a single file or more. However, if you have the trial version of WinRAR you are limited on how much you want to compress.
  • Right click – right click all the files you want to compress.
  • Drop down – After right clicking, choose "Add to archive…" from the drop down menu.
  • Format – Once you have selected "Add to archive…" a window will appear named Archive name and Parameters. In this windows choose “ZIP” under the Archive Format.
  • Name – You can choose to name the file you want to compress. You may also use the drop down menu to choose a different file name under a different Archive format.
  • Other tabs – There are also other options you can use and add while archiving the file such as setting passwords, comments, etc.
  • Send to – Alternatively, you may still use the Send to option from the right click drop down menu and select “Compressed (zipped) Folder”. This will still make the file into a Zip format even if it may show a WinRAR icon.
  • Properties – If you want to be sure that the files have been made into a Zip file and not a Rar as needed, you may right click the file and select Properties. There it will show you the “Type of file:”. If you have a WinRAR Archiver and zipped a file by following the steps above, the Properties of that file will say “WinRAR ZIP archive”.
  • WinZip – If you prefer WinZip, you may download it from here.
  • 7-Zip – Is another archiver with a high compression ratio. It works with vista with the option to unpack and pack several different types of achievers.

Hi Gary Peterson,

I hope this will help to your problem.

Your computer already have WinRAR installed. That's why the only one appear when you try to compress your file and send it to your boss. And you don't have installed WinZip application to your computer. These two were different files as you can see it at the end of the file its .RAR and .ZIP but these two were used to compress file.

You can download WinZip from this link to install.
