Hi,
I recently upgraded to Office 2011.
I have noticed that Outlook does not send or receive emails when i have Skype opened up. Outlook is able to send email perfectly when Skype is not turned on. I always have to use one program or the other.Â
Does anyone know how to make outlook and Skype work simultaneously?
I can’t receive / send email in Outlook when using Skype.
Manjula, are you running the latest version of Skype?
And would you let me know the Windows operating system you are using so that i can help you better?
Is it 64 bit or 32 bit?

I can’t receive / send email in Outlook when using Skype.
I am running Windows Vista 64 bit. And yes i have downloaded the latest version of Skype and re-installed it twice!
I want to know if there is anything i could do before re-installing outlook (i don't want to do this because i already have all my settings in place).
I can’t receive / send email in Outlook when using Skype.
I think it might not be a problem with Skype or Outlook. It may be an issue with the virus guard.
Try updating your virus guard. I had the same problem and i updated my virus guard and the problem was fixed.
Hope this helps.

I can’t receive / send email in Outlook when using Skype.
Hi Experts,
I have tried both suggestions and still no success. I have attached a screenshot of my virus guard update screen. It says it has the latest versions. I am beginning to think that Skye may not be compatible with the 64 bit edition of Windows. I have been having this problem with my new laptop.
My old laptop had Windows XP 32 bit and outlook 2003.
It worked fine with Skype and i had no problems at all.

Well Manjula,
The virus guard seems to be in order. I researched on Skype and 64 bit windows. Skype is compatible with 64 bit edition of windows. Even the virus guard you are using has 32 bit components that run perfectly fine in 64 bit windows.
So the issue might not be with the operating system or the virus guard. And judging by your answer, there is no problem with the firewall either.
I think it might be some setting in Skype. Do you by any chance modify the ports that Skype uses to connect to the internet?
Skype has this setting where it will use alternate ports in parallel to connect to the Internet. This feature in Skype allows you to have clear calls. But it is known that some applications do have a problem with this.
Can you turn OFF this setting and check ? It is under the Tools > Advanced > Connections tab.
There is a check box next to the line where it says "Use port 80 and 443 for alternate connections".
Clear this check box.
I have given an image of the page for you.

Manjula,
You mentioned that you upgraded to Office 2011.
I think you will need to re-install the your virus scanner. This is because the virus guard installs some plugins to scan incoming email for viruses.
These plugins may not be compatible with the new version of Outlook. Reinstalling the virus guard will ensure that the correct version of the plugin is installed.
This may be a long shot but worth a try!

I can’t receive / send email in Outlook when using Skype.
Hi Scott, Cassimfarook,
You both are really knowledgeable in this area. i thank you both for taking your valuable time for helping me out.
Scott i tried your suggestion and turned off the option in the Connections tab in Skype. AND IT WORKED!
Now i can use both Skype and Outlook 2011 without any problem!
Regarding the virus guard re-installation i tried that as well. You know what. It actually solved another problem that i had. You see after upgrading Outlook, i was getting a lot of spam. Usually these get automatically filtered and moved to trash.
It started to work again.
i did not know that the plugin was required to have this feature. I do remember that the virus guard prompted with a window and had something on updating the plugins but i ignored it as i was in a hurry to install Outlook.
THANK YOU BOTH !
I learnt a lot from posting my question on this forum!

I can’t receive / send email in Outlook when using Skype.
Your Microsoft Outlook uses port 25 when accessing SMTP or mail server. But if your POP mail is web base mail, your Microsoft Outlook is using port 80 to access your POP server. In this case, both SKYPE and Microsoft Outlook using port 80, meaning there will be a conflict that is why when the SKYPE is close Microsoft Outlook works for your email.
Best thing to do is change your Microsoft Outlook port number when accessing the internet. But this is not an easy task so you need some skills on setting-up IIS server and Proxy Server.
Check the following link for the instruction of doing it.

Hope this helps and Good Luck!
