Hi there. I need to create a few images for my next website. I know Adobe Illustrator, but my registration just expired.
I need a substitute like that, and I need it very soon. No need to be full of Adobe like functions. Just the basic SVG would work.

There are a lot of options for you. If you don’t want to go for big Soft wares:
Seashore, Picasa, Image forge, Inkscape, Gimp and Gimpsop (photoshop like gimp).
I would recommend  inkscape or gimp.
You can even try gimpshop, if you are familiar with Adobe Photoshop environment.

I need something for SVG, not something like Photoshop.
Are there any substitutes for Adobe Illustrator?

You can find the description of the best, free image editing soft wares here.
Inkscape is just perfect for SVG. It s a free alternative to Adobe Illustrator. Though not as much powerful as its proprietary competitors, you can do very effective and attractive vector graphics drawings with it.

If you are already familiar with Illustrator then you should not have any problem at all. You can still watch plenty of tutorials out there on SVG, specially inkscape.
For example go here
