Importance and representation of subnet mask.
Why subnet mask is important for IP addresses? How is a subnet mask is represented? What are the default subnet masks for the class A,B and C types of IP addresses?

Hi Sarah,
A subnet mask divides the network into parts, which are crucial for performance and security purposes of the network. It also helps in identification of the network a computer is operating in and the routing tables.
Class A subnet Mask is 255.0.0.0, Class B subnet Mask is 255.255.0.0 and Class C subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
For class A, the subnet mask can support a wide range of computers in the network, in class B, the subnet can support quite a substantial number of computers but not like in A, but it is obviously more capable that C which holds a smaller number of PCs.
Hope this helps.
