Intel has taken the wraps off its new Intel-powered Android smartphone – the first phone to be powered by an Intel rather than ARM-based chip – and we’ve had a play with it at the launch. The phone is running Android 2.3 rather than 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, so it looks like Intel still has some work to do to make Android ICS work with the new processor's non-ARM instruction set.
The San Diego is an understated 10-mm thick handset with a rubberized back, which makes it comfortable to hold. The screen is a 4in TFT model with a relatively high 600×1,024-pixel resolution, and we were impressed with its contrast levels and detail; blacks are deep and Android's icons and text look super-sharp. Inside is an Intel Atom Z2460 processor.
It’s a single-core model, but its fast 1.6GHz clock speed and hyper-threading, which should help speed up multi-threaded tasks, mean it's certainly no slouch. Android 2.3 runs very smoothly, with only an almost-imperceptible pause when scrolling between the home screens.
