Microsoft has set Exchange 2003 mailbox size maximum to 2-GB. ADSI edit can be used to increase the size of the mailbox. Steps to be followed to change the Exchange 2003 Mailbox size are

1. Start –> Run

2. Type adsiedit.msc

3. Go to the container that contains users

4. Right-click the user you want to increase the mailbox size for and click on Properties

5. Edit the values mDBStorageQuota, mDBOverQuotaLimit, mDBOverHardQuotaLimit and mDBUseDefaults

mDBStorageQuota(in KB) – value in which you want to issue a warning.

mDBOverQuotaLimit (in KB) – value in which you want to prohibit sending of mail.

mDBOverHardQuotaLimit (in KB) – value in which you want to prohibit sending and receiving of mail.

mDBUseDefaults (Boolean) – decides whether to use the default settings or not. You should set this to False if you want to use recently configured values. The user will now have new mailbox size.

Mailbox size can be different for different users. Treesize is a free download that can be used to know about big storage users.

It is interesting to know that the size of the mailbox does not impact performance. Performance is mainly influenced by the number of things that are present in the commonly used folders like Calendar, messages, notes, contact list, etc. that we access on the server frequently. If a large number of things are present in the folder, operations in that folder will take a long time as compared to others with fewer things.
