Whenever I attempt to open an Office document (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Visio, etc) from SharePoint, Internet Explorer crashes (stops responding).
Can anyone suggest any solution for this problem?
Internet Explorer crashes when opening an Office document from Sharepoint
The issue may be due to the add-ons or toolbars that are not compatible with your Internet Explorer. The following add-ons / toolbars are:
-
Network Optimizer” – Filename: NPIEAddon.dll or NPCommon.dll
-
Media Access Startup” – Filename: HPIEAddon.dll or HPCommon.dll
-
System Search Dispatcher” – Filename: SSD.dll
To fix this incompatibility issue, try the following resolutions below:
Reset the Internet Explorer settings from the Control Panel by following the steps below:
1. Close all programs including IE.
2. For Windows XP: Click Start > Run and then type inetcpl.cpl and click OK.
For Windows Vista: Click Start and then type inetcpl.cpl on the search box and then press enter.
It will launch the Internet Options dialog box.
3. Click Advanced tab and the click Reset under the Reset Internet Explorer settings. And then click the Reset button again.
4. When done resetting, close the dialog box and then restart IE again.
I would also recommend Firefox or Google Chrome for a safer and faster browsing experience.
Internet Explorer crashes when opening an Office document from Sharepoint
Solution 1
You cannot create a new document or check out an existing document in a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 document library when you had multiple versions of Office installed or updated, or had a previous installations repaired, unless you install the 2007 Office hotfix 929360.
Solution 2
-
Do a search for "owssupp.dll". There should be more than one instance of it on the C:
-
Delete all instances of this file from the hard drive (You will need administrator rights)
-
Go to the Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced {tab} > Reset Internet Explorer settings (click reset)
-
Run the Office Diagnostic Tool: Start > Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Tools > Microsoft Office Diagnostic Run the tool When the tool is finished running, you should be able to open Microsoft Office documents in SharePoint
Take into consideration the fact that this ALSO includes the following scenario: You have a SqlServer Reporting Services Website, and you created a SharePoint list which contain links to the reports, now the links are really to the EXCEL export type of the report, so in essence their like Office Excel documents.
