My friend is still running Windows 2008 standard edition. But I thought it is not supported nowadays. Is Windows 2008 standard edition still supported?

Is Windows 2008 standard edition still supported?

The mainstream life of Windows 2008 standard edition ended way back in 2015. Still, Microsoft extended its support till January 2020. End of Microsoft support means it will end giving updates and security patches to the system, which can make the system open to threats. You can still use the version, but it is risky to use.
