Hi there!

I want to create a Linux hdd script random read. I will need this to test the drive capabilities. Which I can use in maintaining the server. Is it safe to make such script?

Hi there,

 

Not only this is a safe method to check your hard drive, but also the best way to quickly test your hard drive performances.

 

There are several ways how you can run random reads on Linux and I would suggest you to go with some already done and checked solutions instead of making your own scripts.

 

My recommendations would be to use either iozone or bonnie++, or both tools. They are highly customizable and will allow you to test the speed and the health of your hard drive.

 

 

Another tool I would suggest you to try is S.M.A.R.T. As one of the most complete tools that will give you every information about your hard drive you could possibly need using the random reads method.
