It is a common problem for windows systems, we see that it is showing that our pendrive or external hard drive has data but when we open it there is nothing and we have lost all write privileges of the device. How can we practically solve this the easy way?

It happens so that some unwanted program generally packed with an image file gains administrator privileges for the drive when being accessed from an administrator account. It puts all your data in a single folder and hides that folder and denies you the write access so you can do nothing but just format it and lose your data. There are many solutions for it on the internet and most of it would not work practically, you can either find the registry value associated with the program but that is not easy.

Easiest way is as follows

a) Boot your system from Ubuntu or some linux based operating system and navigate to your hard drive.

b) Much to your astonishment you would find all your files saved in a folder having the same name as your volume and a few other binary files that are not supposed to be there. Names of the files can vary

c) Remove the files but do not remove anything like $recyclebin. Now open your hard drive in windows.
