During startup my laptop Hp compact Presario CQ62 has been displaying an error message “smart hard disk error”. The smart hard disk check usually displays a message during startup that it has detected an imminent failure.
What could be the possible cause of this problem and how can I diagnosis it?

Hi,
HDD error message in laptop is a problem in software conflict or hardware conflict. Whatever it is you need to do some immediate steps to solve it. Let’s try to figure out what was happened there.
First go to your BIOS setup and see peripheral configuration. Is there HDD shows? If it shows its name with serial no or model no, then it’s ok.
Now in there what is the status of HDD position? Is it primary master or slave? Is it secondary master or slave? Figure it out. If it is not primary master then change setup and make it primary master.
Last option is reinstall or repair windows or OS. It will restore HDD controller in your system.

Your hard drive is nearly completely failing and you need to back your files up and prepare to purchase a new hard drive. Hard drives have an integrated diagnostics chip or sort of like a firmware that checks the hard drive’s ‘health’. This is to prevent loss of data due to hard drive failing without warning.
Some hard drive manufacturers like Seagate have a hard drive diagnostics tool to determine if the hard drive is still working ok. Try downloading one of those. Many laptop have hard drive diagnostics tools as well that you can make use of and it should give you an error code to report to their technical support department.
