Dell Inspiron Laptop Plugged but not Charging

Hi,

I need some advice about my friend's Dell Inspiron Laptop not charging. I have a new battery installed and for some reasons at times it appears to charge and at other times it's not charging. At this time the computer is on/plugged in and when I click the battery icon on the bottom task bar icon it states "22% available (plugged in, not charging)". I had the computer shut off, but plugged in and it didn't charge the battery. Any ideas as to where to start looking?

Thank you.

On most Dells' you can go in to the BIOS and it will tell you in there the state of your battery and if it's charging and at what percentage. If it states not charging still, then it could be down to a faulty motherboard. And even if recalibration does not work. You could try going to the Dell website and seeing if a BIOS update is available But failing that, it could be down to faulty connections on your mainboard. For which you will have to purchase a new Motherboard.

Hi there!

If you have spare battery, you can use that to test on your laptop so you can observe the condition of your present battery? You can also ask a friend to swap battery. If you don’t have anybody to swap it with for testing, have the laptop tested if there is an HP authorized service provider in your area.

You can also try the battery in your laptop now installed on a similar laptop, that would eliminate the possibility that it may be your laptop that is malfunctioning. Also try draining the battery to zero and charge it back again. A good battery would start charging as soon as you plug back AC. Also check you laptop power wires are connected. I had similar issue and when I opened the ram bay, one of the power cords were unplugged from the motherboard. I plugged it in and the battery was charging like new.

There are many ways how to fix laptop power problems.

There is not always the charger faulty. Sometimes this is just a cable between charger and laptop. What indicates that cable is broken. Usually it has fracture near the laptop plug or you can see that it is thinner as the rest of the cable. The solution would be simply find the necessary plug and connect to the cable or if there is enough length simply cut in that place the cable and make a joint.

Another power problem could be inside the laptop. Very often this is a power socket on laptop motherboard. Because sometimes a big force is applied to this socket through cable sometimes the soldering points just breaks. How to identify such a problem.

First sometimes if you touch the power plug connected to the socket and try to move the power suddenly shows up and then again goes down. Sometimes the LED light on charger is on but the laptop seems don't reach the power. To repair this fault you need to bring the laptop to the specialist or if you have qualification it can be done at home using iron solder or some work plus a few hours of time.

Sometimes it can be that the power lead which goes from main socket to the laptop charger is the problem. The symptoms would be not lighting charger's LED lamp. To check it simply use another good lead and connect it to the charger. If it works it means main cable is the problem.

use the usb laptop self-charger cable cable between charger and laptop power socket on laptop motherboard find the necessary plug and connect to the cable
