An Error in I/O Device occurs when Windows XP or Vista, is unable to execute an Input/Output event (like reading or transferring data) while it is attempting to access a drive.

An I/O error might occur with different types of devices or media, as:

  • External hard drives
  • SD cards, etc.

An I/O device error or input/output device error is related to a hardware problem. It can be your optical drive (CD or DVD), USB flash drive, external or portable hard drive, internal hard drive, and others. If you receive this error but you haven’t connected anything to your computer, check the cable connected to your hard drive. Turn off your computer and unplug it from the power.

Open the CPU case and remove all the cables connected to your hard drive. After this, connect the cables back. For the power supply, use the other power supply cable. Once both cables are secured, plug the CPU back to the power and turn it on. See if it works.

If you receive the error when using a CD or DVD disc, repeat the same steps on your optical drive. If you receive the error on a USB flash drive, transfer the USB flash drive to another USB port and try again.
