I just purchased a 17" Lenovo Thinkpad w701 with Intel Core i7, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB HDD, NVIDIA Quadro FX 2800M. My Thinkpad runs on Windows 8. The problem started 2 days ago. The screen just blacked out. Everything works, I'm hearing audio but with a blacked-out screen. Any ideas what this could be?

Hello Ymanda,
This is most possibly caused by a broken screen. Since sound is playing and everything works fine then it is not an OS problem. I suggest that you connect it to an external screen and see if the problem persists. If everything appears fine on the external screen then the problem is the Lenovo screen.

It is probably because of the fact that the capacitors on the power supply board inside. Diagnosis is simplified by the fact that sometimes the capacitors bulges out or leak (but that doesn't mean the ones that don't are still working). Replacement is Quite easy if you can solder and observe polarity and correct values. Capacitors costs like peanuts.Â
