To check your hard drive-

1. In my computer right click on the hard drive you want to check
2. Proceed to properties and then go to tools tab
3. Click on the check now button
4. Then check mark the box automatically fix file system errors and then proceed.

Another way of checking your hard drive for errors aside from using the built-in CHKDSK utility is to use PC Tools Performance Toolkit. Follow the instructions to download and unpack and then install it on your computer. Once installed, start PC Tools then go to “Recovery” tab and click “Repair Drives.”

On the next screen, you have four options to choose for the test: Check Drive, Repair Drive, Surface Scan, and Check Partition Structure. “Check Drive” will only perform basic error checking on the drive. “Repair Drive” will perform moderate checking on the drive which includes checking of files and security descriptors. “Surface Scan” performs advanced checking which includes checking of free space.

This test allows detection of failing sectors and marking them as bad sectors. The last option, “Check Partition Structure,” is an exclusive test for the drive’s partition. If you want to test the drive for bad sectors, select the “Surface Scan” test.
