Mclaughlinm must be in the DBA OS group to stop the database.

Hi there, a technician showed me the setup procedure of Oracle Database Express Edition 11g running on Fedora around three months ago. I thought the setup was quite straightforward then.

However today I encounter a problem when I am working with menu option of the Oracle Stop Database. An error message appears and says I must be the user of the DBA OS group. I think I have not login as a group member. The database would open automatically when the computer is started. The database would shut down automatically when the operating system is closed.

Does anyone have any idea to solve this error?

Any suggestions are highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there Michael M Mellott,

The error you're getting says that the user you're using is in the wrong group, so in order to make things work you will need to move the user to the right, a dba group.

To do that, open the terminal and launch the User Manager application. You can do that by entering the following command:

system-config-users

Confirm the entrance with the root password.

You will get the list of all users, so select the one you are using and click Properties.

When a new window shows up, click the Groups tab.

Scroll through the available groups until you find the one named dba. Check it, and confirm by clicking OK.

Before things are working again you will need to restart your database.

Hope this helped,
Drake Vivian
