I have a problem that I am getting the reference of PDF file reader to unknown file when I try to download it.
Here are the details.
I have replaced the Reader 5.1 version of Reader 9.3. I have Windows XP with service pack 2 and Internet Explorer 6.
However, after trying to download the PDF file from one reliable site I get the pop up security warnings, and getting continued just after clicking that with trial to download the PDF I get the new message that the file type is "unknown".
How to fix this issue?

There are several possible causes of the message that the file type is "unknown". To narrow them down, follow these steps:
1 Use the same PDF reader that originally produced the error and download a different PDF file. Does the "unknown file type" error still appear? If it doesn't, then the original file could be corrupted. If it does, continue to step 2.
2 Try to use an alternate PDF reader and attempt to download the same file. Do you still get the "unknown file type" error? If you do, then the file itself is most likely corrupted. If not, then proceed to step 3.
3. Your PDF reader has not properly registered itself as the default application for PDF files. To fix this problem, do the following:
4. Open Windows Explorer, click "Tools" and then click "Folder Options"
5. In the window that appears, click "File Types", scroll down until you find "PDF", select it and click "Change.."
6. Select your PDF Reader. If it's not listed, click "Browse" and find it in the location where it is installed.

This problem is maybe with the installation. Anyway, try to uninstall and reinstall the program if it is already installed. Download the free version of Revo Uninstaller and install it. Once installed, start Revo then select the affected program among the applications and click “Uninstall”. Follow the normal uninstall process.
When uninstall is complete, click “Scan” to scan your computer for any leftover files and delete everything it finds. This removes everything the program created on your computer. When it is finished, exit Revo then install the program back. If it is a PDF reader, go to Adobe Acrobat Reader DC and download Adobe Reader.
Uncheck the boxes in “Optional offers” if you don’t need them before hitting the “Install now” button. Alternatively, you can download Foxit Reader.
