Microsoft Updates and Windows Updates The Same?

I have been given the job of updating our servers. A job that I have never done and not sure where to start. First question – Is Microsoft Updates and Windows Updates two different jobs? Is is important to update SQL at the same time when updating the other two?

In a nutshell, Windows updates is for the updates to the Operating Systems, and also includes updates for Windows components, for e.g. Internet Explorer, .Net frameworks, Windows Media Player etc.

Microsoft updates covers all the updates for Windows as well as other Microsoft applications, for e.g. Microsoft Office, SQL and Microsoft Exchange. Microsoft updates are free and all you need to do to update is go to the Microsoft Update website, and select which updates you want to install.

Yes, you need to update SQL as well when you update Windows and Microsoft.
