Hi,

Infrared signals (IR) are electromagnetic signals which does have longer wavelength than visible light ones. The frequency range is 430 THz down to 300 GHz.

Generally DVD players or TVs use IR signals to know when to do and what to do. So to convert the cell phone to remote you need IR blaster (adapters) that takes the commands from the user inputs on cell phone and converts them into IR signals.

There are many apps available in the app store that works with Infrared Blasters to control electronic devices. Download the apps and connect the blasters. Some apps have basic functionalities and some can be programmed.

Few apps which are popular are IRB for android and for iPHONE go to Vmoomote.

Hi,

Most single purpose and smart TVs from top companies like Samsung are producing their own apps to make an Android or an iOS smartphones serve as a remote. Probably, it was Loffe from San Francisco who tried this at first. You will however, need some hardware as well apart from apps. For iphone you can use the My TV Remote and this comes for around 10 dollars. For converting iphone into universal remote, you need L5 remote that comes for around 50 dollars.
