MS word : “problem sending the command to the program.”

Hello! I am having a little trouble with my Microsoft Word 2007. I am using Microsoft Office 2007 Student edition but when I start MS Word, the document I would open will just freeze. I also got the error message saying "There was a problem sending the command to the program." I tried to look for a solution and one way I could get rid of the splash screen is to end the process through the Task Manager.

I already uninstalled and reinstalled MS Office and even updated SP1 and SP2 but the problem was still there. I couldn’t even save the files in neither .doc nor .docx file formats. The rest of the MS programs were working fine on the other hand. Can you guys help me figure this out? I would really appreciate it.

Thank you.

Howdy Jorge,

Some reasons why you are getting that kind of error is because you have not installed the Microsoft Office compatibility pack. You need to download and install to be able to access MS Word 2007. Please check out the articles below for more information:

You can also visit the link below and try to look at the MS Compatibility pack which is appropriate to the Operating System that you are using.

I hope that my solution will help you out.

You have to delete some registry key for solving this issue; anyway I show you how to do that, just follow my steps:

  1. First you have to close all your office programs.
  2. Then click on Star go to run and type “regedit” and then click on OK or press enter.
  3. Now try to find below subkey.
  • For Word 2007:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoft Office12.0WordData

  • For Word 2010:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice14.0WordData

  1. After finding your subkey then clicks on Data, and then click on Export on the file menu.
  2. Choose wddata.reg and then save this file on your desktop.
  3. Now select delete from Edit menu and then click on Yes.
  4. Close your Registry Editor and Start your MS word.

Now, if your MS word is working then you resolves the problem. That was a damaged word data registry key, some time it occurs when you change several settings to restore your favorite options in word.

However, if you face same problem yet, then follow my below steps again.

  1. Close your all office programs.
  2. You remember you save a file on your desktop, now find this file and Double click on that file (wddata.reg).
  3. Click on Yes, and then click on OK.

Thank You.
