I was wondering if I could turn my Galaxy note into a remote for all my appliances.

Do they make apps like that now?

Yes you can turn your galaxy note into a  universal remote control by using some android apps available in the market but it also means you have to change your appliances with the same brand as your samsung galaxy note.

Here are some of the examples of Apps that can turn your Android in universal remote:
