Hi. Why can't my Windows XP laptop detect my portable external HDD? I have the 640 GB portable Samsung G2 external drive with the NoiseGuard technology. My laptop does not detect it and the LED indicator light is not lighting up. It works on my Windows 7 desktop. What could be the problem?

Hi Donna,
I had the same problem with my portable Hard Disk Drive. Windows XP sometimes fails on giving drive-name letter for portable HDD so to solve this problem, I did this, you can try do this too:
Go on Control Panel, then click on Admin Tools than go to Computer Management and Disk Management. There you should see your drive. If you see your drive, click right mouse button on the drive and then go to Change Drive Letters. Go to Add, choose drive letter and then click OK.
If this does not help to connect your portable HDD with your Windows 7 computer and save all of your data on your disk, than format your Portable HDD. But, when you are formatting, you must be sure to format this disk in NTFS mode.
