If this is the problem, try connecting the USB device on another computer and see if the problem follows. If the device is detected there but it cannot be detected on your computer, try using first the System File Checker utility. Press the Windows key + R to bring up the “Run” dialog then type without quotes “sfc /scannow” then hit Enter.
Insert your Windows setup CD or DVD on your optical driver when you are prompted then continue. Wait until the process is complete. When it is finished, restart the computer. If the problem continues, try updating your operating system to the latest Service Pack. For Windows XP, download Windows XP Service Pack 3. This is the latest and last Service Pack update for Microsoft Windows XP.
For Windows Vista, download Windows Vista Service Pack 2. This is the latest and last Service Pack update for Microsoft Windows Vista. For Windows 7, download Windows 7 Service Pack 1. This is the latest and only Service Pack update for Microsoft Windows 7. For Windows 8, update to Windows 8.1 from the Windows Store.
