Need help on setting up 2000 Domain Controller in Windows 2008 server

We have two domain controllers.  One is the 2003 Domain Controller which contains the entire 5 FSMO roles and the other is 2000 domain controller intended for the forest.

I wanted to use Windows Server 2008 for the domain controller after accomplishing all the AD prep and others.  The main plan was to move down the 2000 domain controller following the setting up of the AD on 2008 system.

The set up progressed but just before finishing the said process, I encountered an error messages which says that “Operations failed because: Active Directory Domain Services could not create the NTDS Settings, cn=2k8dc1,cn=servers,cn=Default First Site Name,cn=Sites,cn=configuration, dc=amanua,dc=com on the remote AD server2.amanua.com.Ensure that the provided network credentials have sufficient permissions. The DSA operation is unable to proceed because of DNS lookup failure".

Kindly help me solve the error.

It seems that you want to downgrade to the Windows server 2000 DC, and after you have done that you will be able to leave with Windows server 2003 and Windows server 2008. But then during the installation of the active directory of Windows server 2008 processing, errors occurred as you have stated above.

What I think is the cause of the problem is the permission and networking problems, and therefore you should make sure that the account you are using has the appropriate permission to deal with the processing.

When you are done installing the active directory, you will need to look into the dcpromo.log, and from there make sure that there are no errors or warnings included. The best choice to narrow down the problem is DCDIAG and NETDIAG.
