Hi,

Nessus, what is this software and how is it useful?

I know it is a security software but why do we need it. Is it a kind of firewall or security finder?

Your guess is almost right but let me explain you in detail. Nessus is a wonderful security software. It is used to detect the Vulnerabilities. Now let me tell you what Vulnerabilities are.

Vulnerabilities are usually used to promote the remote intruders  which causes damage to your security and sensitive area in your system.

Nessus is also used as a port scanner and it is coded in scripting language. It requires WIN32GUI in Windows to get installed and after installation it requires regular update so it can fight the new virus and harmful attacks on your security system. It also catches the Trojan type viruses.

Nessus is a free vulnerability software that scans your packets for unwanted things through a port scan. It is actually useful if you are managing a mid to large sized network to ensure that there are no data leaks or unwanted loggers. If you are suspicious that there is someone or something that is monitoring your activity then this program will help you find it.

A firewall is different because it is like a wall that you place inside a network to deny permit or change a set of rules so that ports or network transmissions that are going in and out inside a network would be more secure.
