An attachment sent to me looked like it was an audio or Video. I opened it and then tried playing it. However, when playing it there was no sound. An inspection confirmed the cables were all in place.
On top of this I also restarted my laptop. All this resulted to no help. I operate with Gateway Windows XP. Please help me.
No sound when playing audio/video with Gateway Windows XP but
Windows XP lacks support for some audio and video files. You need to download and install audio and video codecs to be able to play the files. For details on how to download and install the codecs, visit http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm
Another way is to convert the video file to a format that Window XP can support thereby use your favourite player to play the video with its sound. For free video conversion software to use, visit http://www.avs4you.com/AVS-Video-Converter.aspx

Don’t go first to the conclusion that your computer has an audio problem or that you are having a problem with your sound card. It is possible that the attachment that was sent to you, since you cannot classify it whether if it is an audio or video, doesn’t really have an audio in it.
To check the sound of your laptop, try playing mp3 music or any audio file with Windows Media Player. Or insert an audio disc on to your CD or DVD drive and then play it using Windows Media Player or any media player in your computer that plays audio media.
Be sure to have working speakers or a working headset so you can hear the music playing and to justify that your laptop has a sound and its sound card is working perfectly.
If you still don’t hear anything while playing the music, then there’s your problem. A sound card replacement will fix the problem.
But, on the other hand, if your laptop plays good music and the sound only disappears when you play the video that was sent to you, then the video file doesn’t really have any sound.

Actually it was only that file who doesn't work well with its audio. Probably you are right Sharathr.. I checked my audio and speaker settings and they are working fine. Then I also tried to convert the file based on its compatible format. Thanks to you too Vicoigara..
