Drive 1 not found Serial ATA SATA 1
Drive 2 not found Serial ATA SATA 2
Drive 3 not found Serial ATA SATA 3

I have OptiPlex GX620 in my Windows XP. While I was starting my computer, I saw these messages above and it asked me to choose whether I would go for Safe mode, Safe mode with network, Last known good configuration or Start windows normally. I have tried each of them one at a time but nothing works. Please help me. What is this problem all about?

I think you have a problem to your SATA cable. For you to know if your drive detected by your computer, Start up your computer, then press Del, you will be proceed to BIOS, if you know BIOS it good. Look for detect hard drives. If you there is no hard drive detected, maybe the problem is on the SATA cable, try to replace it with a new one, and then try again to go to BIOS. If it works the cable is the problem. But if you still not able to detect the drive, the problem is either on the hard disk or to socket on your computer.

That problem may be occurring because a cable from the hard drive and the cd drive to the motherboard may have become loosely attached, and therefore I will suggest that you try taking the top off the computer, and then make sure that all cables are firmly secured on both ends.

As another workaround to the same problem, you can try the following:

  • You will need to go to the bios, and from there you will need to disable the sata 1 2 and 3.
  • Note that the default setting for these ports is usually "ON",  but from the factory they are usually set to 'OFF' unless there is actually a drive that has been hooked up.
  • The Hard drive is usually on Sata 0, and therefore is most likely that the bios got reset to defaults and thus causing the problem.

Go into the bios and disabled sata 1 2 and 3. The Defaults for these ports is "on" but from the factory they are set to off unless there is actually a drive hooked up. The Hard drive is on Sata 0. Most likely for some reason the bios got reset to defaults and this is the net result.

if you are able to see the Blue screen message, it will say something to the effect of 0x00000007b that means that the Sata mode also got reset when the bios got reset to default. You'll need to go into the bios and find where the Sata ports are listed and the Mode or Type will probably say AHCI or Raid. Let me know if it does and what all option you have to be able to set it to.
