Your uninstallation files for Symantec antivirus is probably incomplete or missing a crucial file or two. This happens sometimes with older systems. Try checking in your Symantec folder (where the antivirus is installed) in your C:Program Files for a dedicated Uninstaller.

Look around in its main folder, if you find one try running that and it might uninstall it successfully.

Otherwise you will have to Delete it manually. (Shift+Del).

Deleting is not recommended when you have the option to uninstall. But in this case you can make an exception.

The leftover files in the memory will be washed once you reboot afterwards.

Regards.

Hello Carolyn,

To be able to remove Symantec Antivirus successfully from your computer, you will need to try using the following procedure:

  • On your computer, go to C:Program Files and then open the Symantec Antivirus folder.
  • You will need to delete everything in that folder.
  • After that go back to the control panel and under Add/Remove programs try uninstalling Symantec Antivirus again and see if it will work.

If the above resolution does not work you will need to go to download the MS Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and then use it to get rid of the current Symantec which is having trouble being uninstalled from your system.

Regards,

Carl

Hi Carolyn,

This is a very annoying problem that a lot of people have with their AVs, but fortunately there are a few free Uninstallers available for download.

My favorite – The quickest and easiest – Is AppRemover Effectively remove unwanted applications. It's light and uninvasive, considering how invasive AV software is.

You just download the file (nothing to install), open, and go. It detects what is on your system, including leftover files and fragments, and cleans it up for you. It should work great for Symantec AV.

I hope this helps!

Good luck!

Derek

I’ve also encountered that problem when I was still using Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet Security and it is really a headache. Even if the Symantec application refused to uninstall, there is still a way you can remove it from your computer. Go to Download Revo Uninstaller then download and install the free version. Once installed, start Revo Uninstaller then select the Symantec application you wish to uninstall.

Next, click “Uninstall” and follow the instructions. If the Symantec product still cannot be removed, you can use Revo Uninstaller’s “Forced Uninstall” to forcedly uninstall the application. But unfortunately, this option or feature is not available in the free version. You need to upgrade to the Pro version.

Revo Uninstaller Forced Uninstall feature

If you cannot upgrade to the Pro version, download the Norton Removal Tool. Take note: this program will remove all Norton products on your computer and will not prompt you which application to uninstall. This version supports Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.x.
