Yes, indeed it is.

Several businesses engages in this type of software and a lot of programmer/enthusiasts are developing such.

The software is freely distributed over the internet and is free to modify, distribute, customize, and learn or study. It is an example of collaborative work to develop new software.

A lot of software are now freely given over the web and you can even view their source code to learn how they work inside, if there’s something wrong, you can suggest or modify. Transparency to users is a factor and open-source is good idea. It’s very affordable to develop.

Examples of open-source software are Apache (a web server), XAMPP (a web app server), OpenVPN, Linux, etc…
