Is open Wifi network a secure connection one?

Hi guys, I mostly use Wifi connection in my home and 3G in my smartphone which the service provider offers when ever I go out.Now the question is when ever I connect my Wifi network a new Wifi network is prompting which is a open Wifi network its name is Link Sys I don't know what to do as when I don't have or out of my data usage can I use it, is it a secure network connection or will lead to a new problem in the future?Please help me is there any harm in using this open wifi network?

John, 

 

There is no problem using a public or open wifi network, but you need to take some safety measures in order to avoid problems in the future, as you should know many harmful people or hackers have the enough tech knowledge to connect to your computer and get your files or information.

 

If you are a windows user, I suggest to turn off files and printer sharing. How to do it?

 

Just go to control panel > network and internet > network sharing center > Homegroup and sharing options >change advanced sharing settings > here turn off file, printer, folders sharing. Some windows do this automatically if you declare the connection as "public"

 

If you are a Mac user, go to system preferences>sharing> here make sure all boxes are unchecked.
