Hi,

My optical drive is not reading any of the DVDs that I have. These DVDs work on another system though and I’ve also tried other DVDs that are known to work.

I’d appreciate any help you can provide.

Thanks.

Did you mean that other DVD's are running and only one particular DVD is not reading. Or all other DVD's are also not working?

If all other DVD'd also not working then the possibility is that the problem could be because of your Optical drive which might gone bad. Even if it goes bad you will be able to see the drive listing in your computer, but what is not working is the lens present in the DVD may be it might have gone bad. Try to replace the lens by giving your optical drive some repairing center It won't cost you not more than $10. You can buy a new one rather giving it for repair.

Hi there,

Please check your DVD’s port cable and power cable. I hope your DVD driver is running fine. So just please try changing your port cable and reboot the system. Also check your device manager to confirm that driver is installed properly and compatible with your system. The problem should be solve by now. If not than please contact with the vendor from whom you bought this derive. It can be a problem in lance of your optical driver. So they will either change it or they will change the lance of your DVD’s driver.

Thank you,

Riley weaver.

One possible cause why your optical drive is not reading any DVDs is a dirty lens. Though nothing touches the lens even when the drive is reading a disc, it still gets dirty because of the dust and this is unavoidable. When dirt accumulates on top of the lens, the drive will have a hard time reading a disc.

When you try to access a disc, you may experience some files and folders become unreadable and there are sections of the disc that are accessible. When this happens, it doesn’t mean the drive is already broken and needs replacement. You just need to try clean the lens first using any lens cleaner. You can use the lens cleaner for your DVD player.

Follow the instructions on the lens cleaner to properly clean the lens. Once you are finished, wait about five minutes or longer before trying a disc again to have enough time for the cleaning solution to dry. The hard way of cleaning the lens if you don’t have a lens cleaner is to open up the optical drive and clean the lens manually with soft cotton and rubbing alcohol.

I do this often since I don’t have and I don’t use a lens cleaner. This is for advanced users only. You can also buy an optical lens cleaner online like this one from Amazon: Allsop Ultra ProLens Cleaner.
