Go to control panel and navigate to Power options from system and maintenance. Next check on the power options. The events present is all programmable, and there are different setting available in laptop when Powered on A/C versus powered by battery.
For detailed options, click on “change plan setting” and go to “change advanced power settings”. One can choose the option of what needs to be done when power button is switched on/pressed or when the lid is closed etc.
Usually the system is configured to have system shutdown on pressing the power button.

I don’t think there is really a problem with your computer, I mean physically. This happens maybe because the Power Options of your operating system is not configured properly that’s why when you try to make your computer go to sleep it either shuts downs or will restart the system.
You need to check the power configuration of Microsoft Windows to learn the actual cause of the problem. To check the configuration, click Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, and then select Power Options. In Power Options Properties, select Advanced tab. In “When I press the power button on my computer”, select “Shut down”.
And in “When I press the sleep button on my computer”, select “Stand by”.
See image.
Click Apply then OK. In some cases, you may consider changing the action of the Sleep button. Like in my case, I apply the option “Ask me what to do” in the Sleep button so it will be easier for me to restart the computer. There are also instances where the options for the Sleep button will not appear in the Power Options until you press on the Sleep button.
But this only happens on fresh installations of Microsoft Windows and in some CPU models.
