  1. Configure your computer to start from the CD- or DVD-ROM. As I’m not sure what pc you have, I can’t really give advice on that, as each manufacturer has different ways of doing this.
  2. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer’s CD- or DVD-ROM.
  3. Restart your computer.
  4. A message window with “Press any key to boot from CD” will display, then press any key on the keyboard to boot your computer from Windows XP CD that is in the CD- or DVD-ROM.
  5. When the message “Welcome to Setup” appears on the screen, press the R key on the keyboard to start the recovery console.
  6. Enter the admin password and push Enter.
  7. When the command prompt appears, on the screen, type bootcfg/list and push Enter. All the entries that are available in your current bootup file will be shown on the screen.
  8. The command prompt will show again, and this time type bootcfg/rebuild and push Enter.  This start scanning your computer for the bootup file.
  9. Follow the instructions that will appear on the screen to add Windows installation files to the bootup file.

E.g. when you receive a message that says “Add installation to boot List”, press Y.  After you pushed the Y key, you will see a message saying “Enter Load Identifier” – just type the name of your operating system (Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition) and press Enter. The next message you will receive will say “Enter OS Load options”.  Type /fastdetect and press the Enter button. (The wording on the e.g. above might differ slightly as this will depend on the configuration of your pc).

  1. Type exit
  2. Press Enter
  3. Your computer will restart and the bootup list appears, select the first option on the screen.
