I am in need of your technical help.
I have installed Windows Media Player 12 on my Windows 7 but am having problems playing a certain file – my videos for lecture, using an online media player. I get this error “Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is not supported. If you typed a URL in the Open URL dialog box, try using a different transport protocol (for example, "http:" or "rtsp:"). (-1072885317)"
Windows Media Player works perfectly with other video files. Videos can also be played using the Google Chrome . I have also observed a minor issue, the fast forward option is unavailable.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

Problem Playing Video With Windows Media Player
Windows Media player 12 has option called file types. You have to check all the file types in the list then try for it. I shall recommend using VLC player. This player really plays very well for streaming videos, or stored files. The file types supported by VLC are quite large, larger than the Windows Media player. You download a free trial from the internet and get the flavor of the latest VLC player. You will fins fast forward option in a very different manner. The main problem with it is that the plug-in that are installed on your computer for Google chrome are not seen by the windows media player for its purpose. May be you need to download additional files from the internet and install them.
Thanks.
Problem Playing Video With Windows Media Player
Hai Theresajmickens,
The error appeared because you have tried to play a file which is not supported by Windows Media Player 12. For solving this problem you have to download the appropriate codec from the internet which suites for media player 12. A codec is a compression algorithm, used to reduce the size of a stream. If the media player failed to find the decompression of the codec, the above error will be appeared. All you have to do is to simply search for the codec along with the name of the extension of the file. Or simply click on the 'web help' when the error appears. It will automatically takes you to the windows help page and will instruct you to solve the problem.
Hope these helped you.
Thanks.

Problem Playing Video With Windows Media Player
Hi Theresajmickens,
The problem you are having is not to do with the media player it is due to the fact that some files in the internet or taken by the mobile has some codes which not common in the media player.
This can only be resolved by obtaining this codes using codec or by having a media player which has this codes installed in.
The following are media players that has those codes installed in
1)VLC media player: it is simple , has many features and easy to use
2) K-Lite mega codec pack: contain large codec for mega audio and video pack
3)Vista Codec pack: Meant for vista media player and if installed can play almost all video
