MS Word 2010 shows the following error message when I try to open the files from the document library. "The Microsoft Office Product necessary to open this file is not installed on your computer" I have installed Microsoft Office 2010 on my computer. When word opens, I can open the file but not the short cuts using the pen and recent documents.
A couple of days ago the icons also changed and why I do not know. Do I do anything to solve it?

Problems with opening MS word files
Step 1 : Select the Microsoft office and select the change option from Control Panel.
Step 2: Select Add or Remove Features Radio button option and click on Continue button option from same screen.
Step 3 :Check the all installation options, If any option showing as Not available.
Step 4: If any option was showing as Not available. Change as Run from my computer.
This Problem is being occurred, if select the custom option, while installing office.

Hello,
It seems that you have most probably installed Office 2010, over other office OEM product like office student or home trial version, and instead of FIRST uninstalling it you installed 2010.
Anyway in any case you can perform the following steps in the registry to correct this problem.
But before doing any changes in the registry make a full backup of registry. Please follow the instructions / methods explained in the article on: http://www.winhelponline.com/xp/registry.htm
After the registry is backed up go to:
Start – Run- (in windows xp) or start – search programs and files (In windows vista / 7) and type
Regedit
Now click on computer and press Ctrl + F, on the popup windows write “.docx” (without quotation), also make sure that “Match Whole string only" is checked marked.
Now you will see a screen on which on the left side you see the highlighted folder .docx, if you click on this on the right pane you will see some entries. You will also notice another folder above the docx folder which is called .doc.
What you need to do is match that every entry on the right side of the pane of .docx folder is same as that of .doc folder for example three entries called: Default, ContentType and PerceivedType
Please note you are on the following path of registry currently: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.docx
Now navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClasses.docx and perform the steps mentioned above
Now go to the following path and simply change the d of word document to capital D in front of .doc on the left pane
Now close everything and Reboot your system. Your problem should be resolved.
