One of my friends stole my account to an online game. However, he had prepared for a monthly membership renewal once I had to let go of my membership. I want to know if it is theft or illegal. Any help will do.

Thanks.

Did your friend steal only your game account or did he also steal your mail account too?

By Law, stealing someone's identity and using it to do daily activity is considered as ‘Act of Theft’. If you press charges, your friend will surely face a sentence of cyber law.

If you want to keep your friendship and want to take back your game account, then there is another way. First check that your game account is connected to your e-mail. Now try to log on to the game site.

If you fail to log in, then press the ‘Forgot password’ option and give your mail account. If the game site confirms that, the recovery mail has been sent to your account, check mail account.

You will get the password recovery mail procedure. Follow the password recovery procedure and you will get your account. Now login to the game server and change every bit of information like your birth date, secret question and other options. Alternatively, you can call the game server’s number or chat online to resolve this problem.

Now, listen carefully, did your friend answered any emails regarding this game account. Do not delete the e-mail regarding to your game account. It will come most handy in case of legal procedure. Change also your mail secret question & password.

Now, email to your friend that what he did is unlawful, and you don’t want to lose your account. If he needs a game account, then he could apply legally to the game server and get his own account. Hope this information will help you get your game account.

The only way your friend could have used to take over your online gaming account is because you exposed him to the credentials that you were using to access that account like the username and password, and therefore he changed them to his own and therefore denied you access to the gaming account.

You need to keep information like usernames and passwords to yourself for the accounts that you create online, and it does not have to only gaming accounts but other accounts.

For instance mail passwords, it will be so bad if someone gained access to your email because they could use the information in the email against you. So you will need to talk to your friend if he is a good friend he will allow you to take back ownership of the account.
