Hey, first of all, you need to make sure that your computer is free of any other anti-virus or internet security programs. Then restart your computer and try downloading the program again. The most reliable way to download the correct version is to check whether or not your PC is running the 64 bit or the 32 bit version, then download it using the windows Internet Explorer browser.

If you want to install Microsoft Security Essentials or MSE, check the system requirements first and verify your computer meets those requirements. Microsoft Security Essentials supports Windows 7 and Windows Vista. It requires 1 GHz or faster processor, 1 GB RAM, 800 x 600 minimum screen resolution, 200 MB free space, and internet connection for installation and latest virus definitions update.

Now, if you have Windows 8, unfortunately, you cannot use Microsoft Security Essentials. But you don’t actually need to as Windows 8 includes Windows Defender. It is an antivirus built-in to Windows 8 and newer operating systems. It cannot be downloaded or used on earlier versions of Microsoft Windows like Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

Microsoft Security Essentials was replaced by Windows Defender in Windows 8.
