SharePoint file copy updates when files in the Fileserver is edited

We have an Excel file uploaded to a SharePoint library. When the file owner opens his file from our Fileserver, edits, and renames it, the copy in the SharePoint is also updated. Why does this happen and how do we stop it?

Hallo Bruce John,

I guess the users on the network your own which have access to the file server are accessing the files using administrative rights and therefore you have to create user accounts that have limited rights that will enable the changed that are made by a user to reflect only to them and not all the users on the entire network.

Check your configurations for the file server and see if there is any settings that allows SharePoint to be updated when a user does any modification and correct it.
