There are many video titles out on the market. I have been a regular purchaser of movies.
At the store I came across two new types, apart from the usual DVD titles.
They were termed HD-DVD and Bluray.
I am curious to know which one is best because both of them are a bit pricey!

Should I buy a Blu-Ray movie or HD DVD Movie?
Given the choice, I would choose Blu-Ray titles. This is the future of all movie recordable formats. It is better than DVD and superior to High Definition DVD. Go for the Blu-Ray title!

Comparison with the price of a Blu-Ray disc vs. HD-DVD, what is so special about it that makes Blu-Ray the better choice? I am not yet convinced!

Blu-Ray media is able to store ten times the data capacity of a standard DVD. Storage ranges from 25GB to 50GB. This means you are able to store reasonably high definition content. You get more features such as BD-Live, that is the Blu-Ray disk contains additional programs that allow you to connect to the Internet and download additional content. Higher capacity means you not only get the movie, you get games and programs as well.

You get more special features such as:
-
Commentary by the directors as the movie progresses.
-
View the movie from different angles.
-
View the making of the movie, from its inception to production.
-
Inside look into stunts and how they are performed.
You get high definition resolution at 1080 dpi, with no grainy areas. Blu-Ray titles are pricey now, but forecast is as such they will eventually replace the DVD (same as how the CD disks are now being out-dated in favor of DVD disks).

Interesting. How about copy-protection? Can people copy or rip a Blu-Ray disk, like they can do with DVD disks?

The hardware that is required for disk-copying Blu-Ray disks are pretty expensive. Unlike DVD disks, you must be really serious if you want to go into the trouble of duplicating a Blu-Ray disk. It's simply not worth for normal users.
Blu-Ray disk contains enhanced copy protection over DVD. This copying or ripping the movie is a bit of a task.

The best part is, why do you need to rip a Blu-Ray disk anyway? Given the size of the movie (beyond 15 GB), it's not really worth it, as the disk is designed to store the data. Copying it to the hard disk serves no purpose. Not only movies, but game disks are also being released on Blu-Ray. Although we use the disk for movies, you are not limited to it.

Cool. I will now change my choice for a Blu-Ray movie title. Can this disk be played on my DVD drive or do I need to purchase a separate unit?

You need to purchase a separate player that is capable of playing a Blu-Ray title. Standard DVD players cannot play the Blu-Ray disk. Trust me it's well worth the investment! Look out for the "Blu" logo on the player!
