These two Television companies has informed the public that they are planning to cooperate with the OLED or commonly called Light Emitting diode. This is to combat their rivals the Korean and LG electronics for a set of quality and health oriented Television for the next generation. This is a race for a better set of television set; this will depend on who can produce the said optimized Television set for the near future. Organic LED is also called OLED or Organic Light-Emitting Diode. It is an LED where the emissive electroluminescent layer is a sheet of organic compound that produces light in reaction to an electric current. An Organic LED or OLED has many advantages such as:

  • The plastic, organic layers or sheets in an OLED are more flexible, lighter, and thinner compared to the crystalline layers of an LCD or LED.
  • Since the light-emitting layers in an OLED are lighter, the substrate can be elastic rather than rigid.
  • While glass is a necessity for LCDs and LEDs for support and because it absorbs light, OLEDs don’t need glass.
  • OLEDs don’t need backlighting similar to LCDs. LCDs work by selectively block parts of the backlight to produce the images you see. OLEDs don’t do that because OLEDs produce light themselves.

Though it sounds like OLED is a perfect technology for any types of displays, it also has several disadvantages like:

  • It has a quite shorter lifetime. Despite the fact that red and green OLED layers have longer life span about 46,000 to 230,000 hours, the blue organic layer currently has a quite shorter life span about 14,000 hours maximum.
  • The manufacturing processes for OLED are currently expensive.
  • OLEDs can easily be damaged by water.
