Sony DVD drive unable to play DVD but CD playing
The Sony DVD rom is a very nice ROM. This kind of problem often occurs in your DVD/’CD Rom. Your DVD ROM’s laser might be damaged. DVD ROM cannot read the DVD because of your damaged laser of DVD Rom.
To read a DVD the ROM needs the laser but to read a CD the leaser is not needed. You should repair your DVD from the nearest servicing Centre. I think you have to replace with new one. You can buy SONY or other well known company such as: Liton,ASUS etc. I hope you get the answer of your question
Sony DVD drive unable to play DVD but CD playing
That odd thing also happens to me sometimes where one disc can easily be accessed and read while after inserting a different CD it takes too long for the optical drive to recognize it. This is a sign that the CD/DVD drive’s lens is getting dirty. When you start noticing that your optical drive is getting a hard time recognizing some CD or maybe a DVD disc, this is a good time to start cleaning the drive’s lens. You can clean its lens using any ordinary lens cleaner like the one using in the VCD or DVD player.
If you don’t have a CD cleaner, you can clean the lens manually by opening the optical drive’s casing. But this is only done by those who are already familiar in opening the case. Don’t attempt to open the case and do it manually if you are not experienced.
